Suggest a theme

What is a themed crossword, exactly?

The phrase gets used two different ways, and it's worth knowing both.

In the newspaper tradition, a "themed crossword" is a normal puzzle hiding a trick: three or four long answers share a connection — puns on a phrase, words that can all follow "BREAK", that sort of thing — often with a final "revealer" answer that explains the joke. The rest of the grid is ordinary vocabulary. Spotting the theme is a lovely mid-solve reward, but the puzzle itself is no easier for it.

Then there's the kind we make: fully-themed crosswords, where the topic runs through the whole grid instead of three long answers. An animal crossword is creatures and the things they do; a Christmas puzzle is tinsel and sleighs and carols. It's less about hidden cleverness and more about spending ten happy minutes somewhere you enjoy being.

Why themed puzzles feel easier (and friendlier)

There's a genuine reason a themed crossword is more approachable, and it's not that the words are shorter. When you know most answers belong to one topic, your brain hunts in a much smaller field. "Four letters, barks" could be anything in a general puzzle — in a dog puzzle, you'll have it before you finish reading the clue. That narrowing effect is why themed puzzles are the classic on-ramp for new solvers: the crossings still teach you how crosswords work, but the topic keeps handing you footholds.

It's also why they're satisfying for experienced solvers in a different way — less wrestling, more romping. Not every puzzle needs to be a battle.

Themes that teach: classrooms, kids, and new vocabulary

Teachers discovered themed crosswords long before the internet did. A puzzle where every answer comes from this week's topic — dinosaurs, the solar system, farm animals — is revision that doesn't feel like revision. The crossing letters act as built-in hints, so a child who's nearly-sure of a word gets confirmation instead of frustration. They work wonderfully for early readers, for vocabulary building, and for anyone learning English: the theme provides context, and context is how new words stick.

Ours are free to use in classrooms — photocopy away — and every theme has a printable puzzle pack (with an answer key and a name & date line) for exactly that reason.

Occasions and seasons

The other great home for themed crosswords is the calendar. A Christmas crossword on the table keeps three generations busy while dinner cooks; a Halloween one goes in the party bag; a spring puzzle suits the classroom window display. Seasonal themes are also where printable puzzles shine — some traditions deserve pencil and paper.

How our themed puzzles work

Every theme starts with its own hand-curated word list — a few hundred on-topic words and phrases, each with clues written in our house style: easy, warm, occasionally groan-worthy. Our puzzle engine then weaves fresh grids from that pool, right in your browser, the same way our mini crosswords work — which means unlimited puzzles per theme, never the same one twice. You can read more about the process on how we make our puzzles.

That's also why a new theme takes a little time to arrive: a theme isn't real until its word list is good, and good means hundreds of honest on-topic words, not a few dozen famous ones stretched thin.

We won't pretend there's no filler, though. Small grids are hungry for three- and four-letter words, and most topics run out of honest short ones long before the grid is full. So most themes borrow some everyday words to knit the corners together. The builder reaches for them only when no theme word fits, and each press it builds several grids and hands you the most on-topic one. How far that gets depends on the topic. In our tests, an animal or biology puzzle borrows almost nothing, while the smallest space, weather and summer grids borrow more than half their answers. Each theme's page gives its own numbers.

Common questions

Are themed crosswords easier than regular ones?

Usually, yes — the topic narrows your guessing, as above. But difficulty really comes from the clues, and ours are written easy on purpose. A themed puzzle with cryptic clues would still be a monster; we don't make those.

Which theme is best for young children?

Animals, almost every time — it's the vocabulary children know earliest and most enthusiastically. Dinosaurs are a close second for the age group that can spell TRICERATOPS but not "necessary."

Can I request a theme?

Please do — send us your idea. The list above is our starting lineup, not the final roster, and reader requests genuinely decide what we build next.

Can't decide?

Start with the animal crosswords — the crowd favourite, and the easiest vocabulary for solvers of any age. Or step outside the themes entirely: the unlimited mini crosswords never run dry, and the guide to crossword types compares codewords, arrowords, picture crosswords and more, with a game to try for each format we offer.
